This stone is actually a combination of shells, sand and other materials compressed together at enormous pressure. Because of the varying degrees of hardness in the stone, it is difficult to give the surface a smooth polish.

This stone is formed from bone, vegetation and shell fragments that have been compressed to such a high degree they were turned to stone. These stones come from the Himalayan mountains in India, and have hematite and iron included in this shell fossil.
Jasper is an opaque form of Chalcedony, which is a microcrystalline variety of the mineral Quartz. It often contains an abundance of impurities, and therefore some regard it as a rock instead of a mineral. Jasper is usually associated with brown, yellow, or reddish colors, but may be used to describe other opaque colors of Chalcedony such as dark or mottled green and orange.
